Train to Cuzco

The trip on the autovagon was expensive by comparison to the local train, but it was nice to travel along at a good clip and to have seats to ourselves. If you do want to take the local train, some friends heartily recommended doing so in second class. Second class means sitting next to bunches of bananas and pineapples, but first class on the local train is so crowded that people have to stand, often in the doorway.
